CBP Busts 42 In Human Smuggling Attempt

According to a press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 42 illegal aliens were crammed into a utility trailer hitched to a large pickup truck as a Mexican national tried to smuggle them across the border.

“El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro station arrested a man suspected of smuggling 42 illegal immigrants, which most were dangerously packed in a towed utility trailer Tuesday morning,” the press release said.

The El Centro Sector is in southern California.

CBP said that they stopped the driver of the truck because the suspicious rig was traveling from an area known for human and drug smuggling.

The agents’ hunch turned out to be correct.

“Border Patrol agents conducted a vehicle stop and questioned the driver as to his citizenship,” according to the press release. “The driver stated that he was a Mexican citizen and indicated to the agents that there were people inside the trailer.”

CBP said that there were 38 passengers crammed into the six-foot by 12-foot trailer, and that they were so tightly packed that they could not move. Further, they had not food, water, or ventilation, and the trailer was locked from the outside.

All 42 of the illegal aliens, including the driver of the truck and three juveniles, were taken into custody.

“These individuals were put in extreme circumstances by a callous smuggling organization,” El Centro Sector’s Acting Chief Patrol Agent Ryan J. Scudder said.

“In the event of an accident the amount and degree of injuries could have been catastrophic. I am so grateful that our agents were able to keep these people from harm.”
