A police department in the United Kingdom posted videos to social media celebrating International Pronouns Day.

International Pronouns Day has become a thing.

It will take place on the 16th of October, beginning with today.

Some social media users criticized the day due to the loose assignation of days/weeks/months to a multitude of social justice causes.

In a video tweeted out by DCC Julie Cooke of Cheshire Police, Cooke explains the importance of International Pronouns Day.

Cooke tweets, “Today marks #pronounsday – seeking to make sharing, educating and respecting personal pronouns commonplace.”

In the video, Cooke talks about the importance pronouns have on transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

Cooke says, “being misgendered could have a huge impact on somebody and their personal well-being.

“It also can be used as a form of abuse for somebody–and that just isn’t right.

“Today is about raising awareness, getting people to have conversations, and understanding why it is so important to understand the pronouns that somebody wishes to be used for them.”

The tweet was ratioed, a practice where users ensure the replies outnumber likes and retweets, by social media users expressing their mockery at the communication.

Some social medias sarcastically brought up what they viewed to be a misuse of public resources.

Yesterday, it was revealed that anti-gay and anti-trans hate crimes could carry a 6-month sentence if the accused is convicted.

There is a level of subjectivity involved with prosecuting so-called hate crimes as who’s to determine what qualifies as hate?

Earlier this year, in the UK, a mother was arrested by police for misgendering a transgender person on social media.
